What Is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a long-term mental disorder involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation
What Are The Subtypes of Schizophrenia?
- Paranoid: People who have delusions and hallucinations. These people usually show anger, aloofness, and anxiety
- Disorganized: People have disorganized speech and behavior. They may laugh at inappropriate times and are preoccupied with their own thoughts
- Catatonic: These people have odd posture and barely talk. They also may mimic the behaviors of another person
- Undifferentiated: Show symptoms of above subtypes
- Residual: A person who has had a past episode of schizophrenia, but does not currently show any signs of schizophrenia
What Causes This Mutation?
The mutation occurs on Chromosome 22 and 16. Scientists have found that several genes are associated with schizophrenia, but no gene by itself causes schizophrenia. Although recent studies have also noted that a possible mutation in the gene Neuronal PAD domain protein 3 or NPAS3 might be involved with the formation of schizophrenia.
